SlumberBug® Recommendations for Safe Sleep
Health
Canada and the American Academy of Pediatrics has asked parents to put
babies to sleep on their back and discontinue using any loose bedding
or other soft materials in an infant's sleep environment. This precaution
helps reduce the risk of suffocation and the links to Sudden Infant
Death Syndrome. Child birth educators teach parents how to swaddle but
many parents find the technique difficult. The SlumberBug®
Swaddling Blanket makes swaddling simple, quick and effective. Helping
baby sleep safely on their back has never been so easy.
Every week 3 babies die from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Health
Canada and The American Academy of Pediatrics outline many precautions
you can take to create a safer sleeping environment and aid in effort
towards SIDS prevention.
- Babies should always be placed to sleep on their back.
- It is important to have proper air circulation around your baby's
face. Use a firm mattress, free from loose bedding and other soft
materials.
- Avoid over-clothing or over-covering your baby while she sleeps.
- Babies should be placed in a crib that conforms to safety standards.
- Create a smoke free environment around your baby.
- Breast-feeding has many benefits and may give some protection against
SIDS.
- Discontinue use of nightcaps after the first 12 - 24 hours.
SlumberBug®
Swaddling Blanket may help with SIDS prevention because it:
- helps keep baby on his/her back
- has a gathered neck to keep fabric away from baby's airway
- keeps blanket in place with fasteners, eliminating loose bedding
