Why Swaddle a Newborn Baby?
Generations of mothers have swaddled their newborns and now the SlumberBug®
swaddle makes swaddling quick, and simple with countless benefits for
both mother and baby.
Swaddling Will Help Reduce Startle Reflex
The startle reflex, also known as the Moro reflex is an involuntary
response that will often wake a peacefully sleeping newborn baby. The
startle reflex is present at birth and usually disappears between the
ages of 3 to 6 months. The startle reflex causes the newborn baby to
extend the arms, legs, and fingers and arch the back and typically occurs
when an infant is startled by a loud noise or other environmental stimulus
or feels that he or she is falling. A quick solution to quiet a baby's
startle reflex is to swaddle or wrap the baby securely in a blanket.
According to Dr. Harvey Karp, M.D., author of The Happiest Baby On
the Block, "Swaddling is the cornerstone of calming. It gives nurturing
touch, stops flailing (startle reflex)and focuses your baby's attention...Swaddling
envelopes your baby with a continuous soft caress." The SlumberBug®
swaddle calms a baby's central nervous system and helps them to
relax and sleep without interruption from stimulus.
Swaddling Will Help Reduce Colic
Colic is another factor that keeps newborn babies up at night. The Mayo
Clinic defines colic as crying more than three hours a day, three days
a week for more than three weeks in an otherwise well-fed, healthy baby.
Colic, a frustrating and largely unexplained condition, usually starts
a few weeks after birth and improves by three months. The cause of colic
and why some newborns have colic and others don't is still unknown.
The colic baby tends to be unusually sensitive to stimulation. Dr.
Karp, has done extensive research on colic and concludes that a colic
baby has difficulty with self-calming and needs the sensation of the
womb to help turn on their calming reflex. He goes on to say that colic
can improve with the slight abdominal pressure that a swaddle blanket
can provide. The SlumberBug® swaddle blanket helps a colic baby by;
providing the warmth and security of a mother's womb, reducing stimulation
and, providing subtle tummy pressure.
Swaddling Will Help Reduce Sleep Deprivation
Every new parent can count on at least one universal problem that comes
with the birth of a new baby...sleep deprivation. Research done by the
National Sleep Foundation has shown that too little sleep results in
daytime sleepiness, increased accidents, problems concentrating, poor
performance on the job and in school (and in the home), and possibly,
increased sickness and weight gain. Parents know that it is extremely
hard to maintain a healthy family life when sleep deprivation is prevalent.
According to Dr. Karp, M.D., "just by swaddling your baby, you
may increase your baby's sleeping periods from three to four or even
six hours at a stretch." Parents praise the SlumberBug®
Swaddling Blanket for helping their baby (and them) sleep significantly
more.
Bradley Thach, M.D.
Most recently, Bradley Thach, M.D., professor
of pediatrics at Washington University School of Medicine has published
his findings proving that swaddling infants helps them sleep on their
back, wake up less often, and sleep for longer stretches at a time.
